AppNVM: Software-Defined, Application-Driven SSD

Abstract: We present the design of AppNVM, a software-defined, application-driven solid state drive (SSD) inspired by Software-Defined Networking. AppNVM exposes an application-defined interface without sacrificing performance by separating the data plane from the control plane. We describe the architecture of AppNVM and discuss technical challenges.

Bio: Philippe is associate professor at IT University of Copenhagen. Philippe is co-author of a reference book on database tuning. Philippe has been exploring the performance characteristics of flash devices since 2008. He is leading the CLyDE project, funded by the Danish Independant Research Council, focused on host-SSD co-design. Philippe is a Marie Curie Fellow.
