Implementing Rank Modulation

Abstract: We discuss our recent progress on implementing the rank modulation (RM) scheme. We show that RM can be implemented and evaluated using current NAND flash. We demonstrate an emerging application of RM and show that RM substantially outperforms MLC with the same coding redundancy. We show that a state of art NAND architecture can be easily revised to implement RM. All the experimental data in this talk come off recent MLC NAND flash of multiple vendors.

Bio: Yue is a postdoctoral fellow at California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on both theoretical and experimental aspects of coding and signal processing for non-volatile memories. Yue worked as a summer intern at LSI in 2013. He received Ph. D in computer science from Texas A&M University in 2014.
