Analysis of Flash Cleaning

Abstract: In this talk I present analytic models for write amplification in page-mapped FTLs for non-uniform (i.e. hot and cold) traffic, using arrival models which describe two extremes of typical storage workloads - overwrite-only and create/delete operation. Based on these models we can describe FTLs which achieve optimal performance for the corresponding workloads; I will describe these optimal FTLs as well as practical approximations which approach them in performance.

Bio: Peter Desnoyers received his Ph.D from UMass Amherst in 2008, after a 15-year career in industry, and is an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University. His research focuses on both algorithms and applications for non-volatile memory.
